Akron's Bats Not Stahl-ed on Saturday
by Steven Smith

BOWIE-- Despite the best attempts of a comeback, the Baysox fall short to the Akron Aeros on Saturday night, 7-5. The Aeros took the second game of the four game due helped in large part to 5 first inning runs.

The Aeros got those runs off of 24- year old southpaw Richard Stahl, who made his first start at the AA level on Saturday night in place of Hayden Penn, who was promoted to Baltimore. Stahl struggled mightily surrendering 4 hits, and 2 walks leading to those 5 Akron runs. The Aeros batted around and there was significant damage done but had it not been for a Jason Cooper force out at the plate with the bases loaded and an Ivan Ochoa ground out to end the threat, the damage could have been far more severe.

Stahl would settle in nicely over the next 4 innings as he allowed only 1 run on an RBI single by Pat Osborn in the 5th. This extended Akron's lead to 6-2. Had it not been from a strong throw in left by Simon Pond to get Osborn trying to stretch that single into a double, the situation in the 5th could’ve been a lot dicier. After 5 innings, Stahl’s debut at Bowie was over as he allowed 9 hits and 6 runs, all of which were earned.

Fausto Carmona, the Aeros starter on Saturday was very much in control from the start. The only two runs he surrendered on the night, came in the bottom of the 2nd inning, when Mike Huggins connected on a 2 run shot deep to left, and that cut the Baysox deficit to 5-2. In the 7th inning, Carmona surrendered an unearned run as Ivan Ochoa booted a routine ground ball which allowed Jeff Inglin to score, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Carmona would go 6.2 IP, allowing only 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 7 strikeouts and unusually high 3 walks for a pitcher with tremendous control.

The Baysox used a platoon of 3 relievers tonight to bridge the final 4 innings. Melqui Torres pitched two scoreless innings. Chris Piersoll, who also made his Double-A debut on Satuday, pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning. Ryan Keefer was not as successful he surrendered back to back doubles to Eider Torres and Shaun Larkin, which gave Akron some extra support and the Aeros took a 7-3 lead to the bottom of the 9th.

Todd Pennington came on to try to record the final 3 outs of Saturday's game. However, he worked himself into a huge hole surrendering leadoff walks to Jeff Inglin and Cory Keylor. With the Baysox down to their final hope, shortstop Brandon Fahey came through with a 2-run double at 7-5. Manager Torey Lovullo asked Chris Cooper to get the final out. Peter Bergeron represented the tying run, and Bergeron did hit his first Baysox home run on Friday Night off of Dan Denham. However, Cooper struck out Bergeron to end the game, and send 6,307 fans from Prince George’s Stadium, home sad.

The Baysox fall to 24-24, the Aeros improve to 26-21. Brian Forystek will pitch for the Baysox on Sunday, and he will be opposed by Jake Dittler of Akron. All the action can be heard here on WRGW, the Baysox Radio Network at 12:50 PM, with a first pitch schedule for 1:05 PM
