Baysox can't capitalize on Johnson HR, drop 3rd straight to Akron BOWIE, Md.-- Trailing by 2, heading into the home half of the 9th inning, the Baysox stranded 12 men on base and had only scored 1 run on 10 hits. After Joey Hammond dribbled a single down the third base line to start the inning, Tripper Johnson came up with a huge 2-run shot to tie the game 3-3 and force extra innings. However, in the top of the 11th inning, Akron strung 3 runs together helped by some shaky Baysox defense en route to a series clinching, 6-3 victory on Monday. Starters Jake Dittler for Akron and Cory Morris for Bowie were both rather effective on Monday. Dittler worked himself in out of trouble all day and only allowed a Cory Keylor RBI single in the 3rd, which opened the scoring and put Bowie up 1-0. Dittler would go 6.1 IP, allowing 9 hits, only that 1 run and he struck out 4 Baysox batters. Cory Morris cruised through 4.2 innings, before surrendering back to back RBI doubles to Shaun Larkin and Eider Torres, which put Akron up 2-1. Morris was done after 5 pretty strong innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, and 2 walks while striking out 5. The Aeros would tack on some insurance in the 7th when Jonathan Van Every connected on his 9th home run of the year, putting Akron ahead 3-1. Aeros manager Torey Lovullo called on Steve Green to get the final 3 outs instead of normal closer Todd Pennington. Then, with 1 on and nobody out, Tripper Johnson hit that dramatic home run to knot the game at 3-3, his 4th of the season. However, in the 11th, the Aeros got 3 runs off Baysox reliever Sendy Rleal. The Aeros rally was aided by a poor decision from shortstop Brandon Fahey to throw home on a ground ball hit up the middle with the infield back. That allowed the first run to score. Then, a throwing error from catcher Brandon Marsters on a caught stealing attempt, eliminated the double play, and brought in Van Every from 3rd. Eider Torres took advantage of the extended inning as he drove in the final Aeros run on a double that scored Javier Herrera. Todd Pennington nailed down the save in the bottom of the 11th and the Baysox fall to 24-26, by dropping their 3rd straight. Previous games from the series: Friday- Bowie 4, Akron 2 Saturday- Akron 7, Bowie 5 Sunday- Akron 11, Bowie 3 |
