Baysox Able to Come Up With Clutch Hitting, 6-2 Win
by Steven Smith

BOWIE, Md.-- Whatever trouble the Baysox had hitting with men in scoring position during the series with Akron left town along with the Aeros. The Baysox snapped their 3-game losing and beat the Reading Phillies in the series opener, 6-2 on Tuesday night.

The Baysox scored early and often off of Phillies' starter Allen Davis. The Baysox began their hot hitting in the home half of the 1st as the first 3 men reached capped off by a Tripper Johnson knocked in 2 runs with a single in the first that put Bowie up 2-0. The Baysox continued their scoring in the 3rd inning with an RBI single Jeff Inglin, and then a sacrifice fly from Woody Cliffords to go up 4-0. More clutch hitting in the 5th inning from the Baysox as the slumping Simon Pond picked up an RBI double as did Woody Cliffords to put the Baysox up 6-1 and chase starter Allen Davis. Davis went 4.2 IP, surrendering 9 hits, 6 earned runs and 3 walks, half of his season walk total coming into tonight. The Phillies platoon of relievers were effective, however the damage and the Baysox got all the offense they needed.

Baysox starter Kurt Birkins continued his dominance at home, going to 2-1 at Prince George’s Stadium, allowing 1 earned run in 6 innings. The Phillies got lone runs in the 4th and 6th, the second of which was aided by a Brandon Fahey error. Chris Piersoll and Melqui Torres pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief to ensure the 6-2 Bowie victory.

The Baysox conclude May with a 16-13 record, following a 9-13 April. This puts them at 25-26, 4 games behind Eastern League Southern Division leading Akron. Bowie will send Eric DuBose to the mound on Wednesday as they look to start June off on as good a note as they ended May on. The Phillies will counter with righty Mike Smith. All the action gets underway at 7:05 PM, pregame starting at 6:50 PM here on WRGW, your Baysox Radio Network.
