Baysox Can't Blame Pitching for Struggles in Trenton
By Steven Smith
TRENTON, NJ.-- The Baysox dropped the series at Waterfront Park this
week to the Trenton Thunder, but don’t blame Baysox pitching. The
Baysox surrendered 14 runs over games, only 10 of which were earned.
Starting pitchers only allowed 4 earned runs in 4 starts, and the
Baysox still couldn’t capitalize. The offense squandered many
opportunities to score, and the Baysox hit into numerous double plays
ending their threats prematurely.
The Baysox sent Brian Forystek to the mound on Monday, and got a very
good starting performance out of the struggling starter. Forystek had
only 1 hiccup in the 2nd inning, surrendering 2 runs over 6 innings.
The Baysox clawed back to tie and eventually take the lead and Tripper
Johnson's solo HR (6) in the 8th. The Baysox led 3-2, but due to the
call up of Chris Ray, Don Werner had to come up with a new way to piece
the game together. John Parrish, who was demoted from Baltimore,
surrendered the game tying run in the 8th, and then Ryan Keefer
surrendered three successive base hits in the 9th on just 4 pitches, as
the Baysox lost the series opener, 4-3.
In the second game of the 4 game series, the storylines for the entire
2005 Baysox season came to the forefront. Good pitching, and missed
opportunities made Tuesday's another low scoring battle. The Baysox
jumped out early on a 2-out RBI single by Joey Hammond. Little did they
know, that would be basically their entire offense for the entire game,
as Thunder starter Charlie Isaacson shut them down from that point
forward. Baysox starter Cory Morris rolled through the first 3 innings,
but surrendered a 2-run HR to Eric Crozier in the 4th. This signaled
the beginning of the end as the Baysox crumbled defensively, making 3
errors leading directly to 3 Trenton runs. The Thunder took game 2 of
the series, beating the Baysox 5-1.
The Baysox came into Wednesday having lost the first 2 in the series,
and 3 in a row overall. Kurt Birkins, who has struggled quite a bit on
the road this season, picked up where he left off against Portland by
going 6 strong, shutout innings. John Parrish and Sendy Rleal pitched a
scoreless 3 innings of relief as the Baysox make Luis Matos' 2-run home
run off Thunder starter Jon Skaggs stand up. The Baysox snapped their
losing streak and get back to within a game of .500 by blanking
Trenton, 2-0.
Thursday was the series finale at Waterfront Park. The Baysox called on
Richard Stahl to earn them a series split. Richard Stahl continued
shutting opposing hitters down as he went 5 scoreless innings, as he
has only allowed 1 run in his last 18 innings. The Baysox got 1 run in
the first inning on Tripper Johnson's 2-out RBI single, and led 1-0.
Bowie didn’t score from that point despite scattering 7 more hits, and
having a bases loaded nobody out chance in the 9th. The Thunder did
their all scoring in their final 2 chances at bat. Nick McCurdy
surrendered a 3 run shot to Kevin Thompson in the 7th, and Scott Rice
gave up a 2 run double to Jason Brown in the 8th. The Baysox fall 5-1
and lose the series at Trenton.
The Baysox now head on to Akron, a team they look up at in Eastern
League Southern Division standing and a team they have struggled
against mightily this year. Eric DuBose will take the hill in the
series opener against the Aeros. Brian Forystek will go on Saturday and
Cory Morris will take the hill on Sunday. The next Baysox home game is
June 24, when Bowie hosts the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
