Baysox Drop 2 of 3 to Harrisburg, Remain Optimistic
By Steven Smith
BOWIE, Md.-- The Baysox and Senators entered this series neck and neck
in the standings. The Baysox had a 2 game lead on Harrisburg and they
were returning home, glad to see anybody but Akron.
Tuesday turned out to be a rough go of things for the Baysox, as
starter Eric DuBose surrendered 5 runs on 7 consecutive hits. The
Baysox tried eagerly to fight back, but all they were able to do was
post single runs in the 3rd, 6th, and 9th, as they fell 5-3. Manager
Don Werner was very pleased with the effort of Eric DuBose after that
first inning, and the effort the team gave trying to come back after
that tough 1st inning hole they dug themselves. Also, Simon Pond hit
his 4th home run of the season off of Jason Bergmann in the 9th inning,
giving him a multi-hit game and showing signs of breaking out of his
slump.
Richard Stahl was scheduled to start Wednesday’s game, but due to a
slight groin pull he was scratched from his start and Brian Forystek
would take the mound. Forystek, as did DuBose the previous night, had
some first inning jitters. Forystek allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and the
Baysox were forced to play catch up again. Peter Bergeron did score a
first inning run to cut the lead in half but through 4 and a half,
Harrisburg had staked themselves to a 5-1 lead. Despite Tripper
Johnson’s 2 run double in the bottom of the 5th, the Baysox got nothing
off of reliever Saul Rivera and fell by the same score as the previous
night, 5-3.
The Baysox wanted desperately to avoid a sweep, so they called on
strikeout machine Cory Morris to help them break their slide. Morris
was pretty dominant as he struck out 9 batters in 5 innings and got out
of 2 bases loaded situations without allowing a run. He was also staked
to some early run support when the Baysox fell in love with the
longball. Tripper Johnson hit his 5th home run of the year to put the
Baysox up 2-0, and then 2 batters later Cory Keylor drove one over the
fence in right center and the Baysox led 3-0 after 1 inning. A Gary
Cates sac fly made it 4-0 and the combination of Cory Morris, Ryan
Keefer and Chris Ray needed no more help. The Baysox rolled to a 6-2
victory breaking their 3 game slide. Chris Ray recorded his 15th
consecutive save opportunity, which breaks the previous of 14 set by
current Cubs reliever Joe Borowski in 1994.
The Baysox begin a weekend series with the Portland Sea Dogs. The
Baysox are 6-0 vs. Portland this season. David Pauley will oppose Kurt
Birkins on Friday.
