Extra Innings Worth the Effort in Series vs. Norwich
By Steven Smith

BOWIE, Md.-- In a 4 game series vs. the Navigators this week, the Baysox needed extra innings in 3 of those games, taking 3 of 4 from the AA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Peter Bergeron, Simon Pond, and the rehabbing Javy Lopez all made big impacts in the series.

On Monday, a very promising pitching duel was on top at Prince George's Stadium. The highly touted phenom Merkin Valdez took the mound for Norwich and Cory Morris, the Baysox all-star went for Bowie. Simon Pond tagged Valdez for his 12th home run of the year and Morris was flawless. Therefore, Morris just outduled Valdez while the starters were in the game, but by time each team had to go to their bullpen, the Gators were able to bounce back by getting 2 runs in the 8th off of Scott Rice. This tied the game at 3-3. In the Bottom of the 10th inning, Peter Bergeron delivered a game winning single off James Garcia. The single scored Tripper Johnson and the Baysox won 4-3, giving the win to Sendy Rleal.

On Tuesday, the two teams battled in a fierce, well fought doubleheader. In game 1, the Baysox got out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of back to back RBI singles from Brandon Marsters and Brandon Fahey. However, the Baysox couldn't hold the lead. In the 4th inning, Eliezer Alfonzo singled to drive in a run and cut the Baysox lead to 2-1. In the 5th, Daniel Ortmeier hit a huge 2-out RBI double scoring Fred Lewis and the game was tied at 2-2. In the final inning of the rain shortened 7-inning game, Kevin Frandsen delivered the game winning base hit for Norwich off closer Sendy Rleal as Norwich rolled to a 3-2 win. In game 2, the Baysox and Gators were involved in another hotly contested pitchers' duel. Anthony Moreno and Eric DuBose each gave up 1 run in their starts, therefore the game again came down to the bullpens. It would again go to extra innings as in the bottom of the 8th inning, the always clutch Peter Bergeron delivered the game winning hit off of Alfredo Simon as the Baysox salvage 1 game of the doubleheader.

In the finale on Wednesday, the Baysox looked to take 3 of 4 from Norwich. They welcomed Orioles catcher, Javy Lopez to the roster as he was beginning a rehab stint in Bowie. The Navigators got out to a quick start, scoring 3 first inning runs off of Baysox starter Hayden Penn. The Navigators would build their lead as high as 4-0 before the Baysox chipped away. They got 3 runs in the 6th off of Gators starter, Patrick Misch and trailed only 4-3 through 6. The Baysox then got a wild run in the 7th inning as Ramon Nivar struck out, however the ball got away from Gators catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, allowing Bergeron to score to tie the game at 4-4. That's where the game stood until the bottom of the 12th inning when, Javy Lopez hit a sacrifice fly off of Alfredo Simon, giving him his 2nd loss in as many games. Chris Piersoll won his second straight game, as the Baysox do take 3 of 4 vs. Norwich.

This weekend the Baysox will welcome in the Binghamton Mets for a 3 game series. Richard Stahl will take the hill for the Baysox on Friday. Cory Morris will go on Saturday and Kurt Birkins will pitch on Sunday.
