Binghamton Starting Pitching Dominates Baysox, Gives Mets Series Win
By Steven Smith
BOWIE, Md.-- All season long the Baysox have had the
better pitching staff and have relied on pitching to translate into
wins. This weekend at Prince George's stadium, the Baysox met their
match in terms of pitching and paid for it by dropping 2 out of 3 to
Binghamton.
Friday, Richard Stahl who has pitched decently this
season was going for his first win of the year. He was opposed by
Yusmeiro Petit, the #2 rated prospect in the entire Mets organization.
Petit sure showed why the scouts love him as he pitched a complete
game, en route to a 4-2 B-Mets victory over the Baysox. Petit allowed
only 2 runs during his 9 innings, both of which Bowie scored in the
4th. Wayne Lydon used his speed to get the Mets out in front in the
first, and then Lastings Milledge hit an RBI single in the 2nd and an
RBI double in the 4th to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. Stahl was
ineffective on Friday allowing 6 walks and 3 runs in 3.1 IP. Bowie got
an RBI double Simon Pond and an RBI groundout from Tripper Johnson to
make it a 3-2 game. However, Petit settled down and was flawless from
then on giving the Mets a 4-2 win in the opener.
Saturday, Orlando Roman pitched 6 terrific innings
allowing only 1 run while Baysox starter Kurt Birkins allowed 4 runs in
just over 4 innings. The Baysox trailed 5-1 heading in to the Bottom of
the 8th and knowing Bowie's struggles offensively, it seemed at the
time like an insurmountable lead. However, Bowie was able to chip away
against the Mets' bullpen over their final 6 outs. Jeremy Hill came on
and surrendered 2 runs in just .2 IP. Heading into the bottom of the
9th, the Baysox still needed 2 more to tie. Anderson Garcia who came on
to get Joey Hammond to end the 8th, and remained in the game to pitch
the 9th. After issuing walks to Omar Rogers and Peter Bergeron, the
Baysox were in business to tie. The Baysox were in a situation where
they trailed 5-4 with 2 out on Peter Bergeron on third base,
representing the tying run. With Brandon Marsters up and down to his
final strike, Anderson Garcia started his motion to the plate and then
stopped, therefore balking in the tying run. In the bottom of the 11th,
Brandon Fahey singled through the right side to score the game winning
run and Bowie won a 6-5 thriller.
Sunday, the Binghamton would start their first lefty
starter of the year. Evan MacLane was promoted from Class A St. Lucie
to start the rubber game of the 3 game set. Cory Morris took the hill
for Bowie. These 2 were locked in a good old fashioned scoreless
pitchers' duel through 6 innings. In the top of the 7th, the Baysox
called on David Manning for another inning of scoreless but Manning ran
into trouble and allowed 2 runs in his .2 IP. Even though the Baysox
bullpen was flawless over the final 2.1 innings, the damage was done as
Evan MacLane only needed 1 of those runs. The southpaw won his AA debut
with a 2-0 CG shutout.
BAYSOX NOTES: Javy Lopez went 6 for 14 on his rehab
stint with the Baysox…The Baysox went to extra innings 4 out of 7 games
on the homestand…Bowie finished the homestand 4-3.
ON TAP: The Baysox begin a 4 game series at Reading
on Monday, then head to Harrisburg for 3 games, beginning on Friday.
The next Baysox home game will be August 1st at 7:05 PM vs. Norwich.
