What’s in Store for the 2023 WRGW Blog?

By Francisco “A.J.” Camacho, Max Cohen, Rosie Carroll, Ashleigh Tobin, Carolina Carmo, & Amita Ganesh

A lot, actually!

The WRGW Blog has teetered throughout its existence. Some years it has produced frequent and relevant content with consistency while other times it has admittedly needed some luster. We as the current cohort of editors are determined to make the Blog live up to its potential.

Our goals by the end of the semester are as follows:

  1. Improve the website to make it more user-friendly.
  2. Produce at least one piece a week per section (News, Culture, Music, & Sports).
  3. Start a weekly Blog newsletter email informing our readers about our best recent content.
  4. Establish weekly meetings with all Blog editors and writers.

Behind the scenes, we’ve already checked this fourth goal off our list. Starting today, we are hitting the ground running to see the other three accomplished.

But the changes don’t stop there. We’re welcoming Isabel Bozarth as our inaugural Photography Director to scour Foggy Bottom, the Vern, and beyond. Thea Lawson will be our first Opinions Director to manage op-eds submitted by you in the GW community and the DC area more broadly. How do you submit an op-ed for the Blog, you ask? Write it up (400-1,200 words) and submit it through our brand-new submissions form.

And your opinion doesn’t even have to be about campus or DC news! If you write it well, we might be publishing an argument that hot dogs are sandwiches—even though it is the official opinion of WRGW that hot dogs are tacos (NOTE: Official opinion may not actually be official or at all serious).

Meanwhile, our multi-named Blog Editor Francisco (a.k.a. “A.J.”; a.k.a. “Fran”) Camacho will start a weekly Editor’s column that goes live every Friday. For the first few weeks, he’ll be experimenting with different ideas: Looking at a news story from a different angle, profiling a famous person in Washington, and reflecting on silly Blackboard comments (we’ve all had them). After some experimenting, we’ll settle down on one thematic repeating series.

By the semester’s end, we hope to have set up a Blog newsletter that readers can sign-up for to have the latest important content from the Blog delivered straight to their (your) inboxes.

All of this while we are expanding into investigative news work, continuing our unparalleled sports coverage, and doubling down on our culture and music reviews. So make sure to stay tuned and keep a WRGW tab open on your laptop for all of the best campus media content!
