Everyone Complains How You Can’t Find Love at GWU – They Just Forgot to Look for a WRGW Boy

By Kate Carpenter

Everyone at GW always talks about how the University’s dating scene is abysmal. I always hear complaints about the emotionally distant frat boys, the Devil’s Advocate Elliott kids, or the playboy stoners that break your heart. But what about the blue-eyed WRGW boys? Trust me: in the deep depths of the University Student Center, there is a boy tuning up the WRGW station board and flicking the “on air” sign. He has a smile made for Crest commercials, blue eyes that reflect the ocean and a witty humor that could even make Tim Robinson laugh. But sorry y’all; He’s taken.

Henry Long is a fourth year member of WRGW. When we began to first kindle our relationship in 2020, he was working with the podcast department on a show about the Student Association. Of course, I was a seasoned veteran on the SA and agreed to participate in one episode of the podcast. While we bantered back and forth about school spirit, I thought “maybe this boy I met freshman year is actually kinda cute and cool!” So romantic right? No. After recording that podcast, it was the last time I would hear from him in five months. I guess Henry didn’t feel the same connection I felt through the computer screen while speaking about the SA. How could he not?! Obviously the SA is sooooo sexy. Bummer I guess.

I guess I had caught his eye more than I realized. I was surprised when three months later he randomly texted me with a question about my hometown. I responded with enthusiasm, and we quickly developed a classic college situationship. After some 2021 Zoom call dates and lots of texting across state borders, we went on our first date on May 2nd. Okay that’s a lie. It was supposed to be May 2nd, but he pushed it to May 3rd so he could go to the WRGW Board picnic instead. Priorities! Whatever; I forgave him.

WRGW was not only our matchmaker, but it helped make our love stronger every day. Henry has since invited me to be a guest on air, taught me how to edit a podcast and ordered me the sickest WRGW merch. Even as such an outsider, Henry has made WRGW feel like a home to me.

Throughout our relationship, I have seen nothing that inspires Henry more than WRGW. It has been his creative outlet to share music, sports and his famous hot takes. He has chased his Basketball announcing dreams on the WRGW perch in the Smith Center, while always sending me a wink in the crowd. When the broadcast light turns on, I see his eyes light up in such a special way.

I have spent every one of his shows sitting on the floor in the hallway across from the station, headphones on, listening and watching. I had to see the way he smiled when speaking about Formula 1, 90s Punk Rock or any of the other topics he loves to know too much about. While I still think he has a face for television that shouldn’t be hidden behind a soundboard, his passion for radio is undeniable and his talent mesmerizes me.

When I go back and listen to that original podcast we created together, I am reminded that we fell in love because of WRGW. This organization is so special to Henry and that means the world to me.

Yes, I may only be considered a WRGW senior because I co-hosted a show this semester with one of Henry’s best friends, but regardless, thank you WRGW for fostering a very special love. And to Henry, I love you. Please never lose your passion for radio.<3 To the rest of GWU, I am sorry that I snagged the greatest boyfriend on campus. But maybe if you check the basement of the USC like I did, you’ll find your own Henry Long. 😉
