Coming off their critically acclaimed 2023 record The Beggar, Michael Gira and his band come to the District for the first time in nearly eight years since their last performance at the 9:30 Club in 2016. The Beggar, which comes almost 40 years after the band’s debut record Filth, showcases how much the band has changed since their original inception.
Dawning as a noise rock group during the no-wave movement in New York, the band’s style would undergo multiple changes in sound over the years. By the early 1990s, the band was dawning gothic rock and folk sounds for their albums like White Light From the Mouth of Infinity, Love of Life, and even parts of The Great Annihilator. But, in 1996, the band released their magnum opus, Soundtracks for the Blind, which takes elements from multiple genres to create a two-and-a-half-hour-long behemoth of a record that would also serve as their finale…before they decided to regroup in January of 2010 without core member Jarboe. This reunion would start a second renaissance for the band; leading to the release of multiple critically acclaimed records, including the new LP, for which they are touring with support from Swans core member Kristof Hahn.
