CONCERT PREVIEW: Portugal. The Man @ The Anthem, 2/24

By Sarah Wren Robinson

As I prepared to review the Portugal. The Man, my excitement was interrupted by a realization—I only knew their hit song, “Feel It Still.” How could I offer a genuine preview without familiarity with their other works? Turning to others for recommendations left little beyond that one popular track. So I embarked on a journey through their discography starting with their debut album.

Through my exploration I found Portugal. The Man’s sound has changed many times throughout their career. They’ve explored different styles, ranging from gospel, blues, emo, electronic, alternative rock and pop. They mixed genres in order to find their own personal style. Additionally, the band managed to shine instrumentally every time — the bass lines and melodies are what hook listeners to the songs. The simple lyrics amplifies these instrumentals, as everyone is focused on the way the music sounds instead it’s saying.

Delving into the discography of Portugal. The Man has been an amusing journey, revealing the band’s commitment to experimenting and evolving. From their stripped-back beginnings to their chart-topping hit, each album represents a chapter in their story of musical exploration. As I anticipate the upcoming concert, I am filled with excitement, eager to witness firsthand the energy and creativity that Portugal. The Man has to offer. I’m most excited to notice the hints of genres built into their songs and to see how they perform physically on stage. With a smaller venue, their stage presence is bound to shine.
