George Washington gymnastics wins again in Alex deMoura rip current awareness meet

By: Tarryn Mallon

George Washington gymnastics faced three teams during their rip current awareness meet on Sunday, honoring the late GW gymnast Alex deMoura. The Revolutionaries defeated Cornell University, Ursinus College and University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse with their first score of the season shattering 196.

The Revs recently posted their two highest scores of the season before their bye week this past week and currently rank 37th in the country for Division I gymnastics. The team posted a 195.750 at the Towson invite and a 195.400 at Temple’s invitational.

Freshman Lola Montevago and senior Rachel Katz entered the meet as standouts for GW, with Katz earning the East Atlantic Gymnastics League’s Co-Specialist of the Week award and Montevago receiving Rookie Specialist of the Week honors.

The Alex deMoura Memorial rip current awareness meet was held this year in honor of a former GW gymnast who lost her life while swimming. The Revs debuted a new leotard at this meet during a special ceremony in her honor.

George Washington swept all four events, with one gymnast claiming the championship title on each apparatus.

George Washington sophomore Delaney Dehaan is a gymnast to watch in the EAGL conference, earning two event victories in a standout performance. She won vault with a personal-best 9.900 and tied for first on floor with teammate Kendall Whitman, who is known for excelling in the event, as both scored 9.925.

Montevago claimed the uneven bars title with a score of 9.850, a fitting win as she has been a key anchor for the Revolutionaries on the event this season.

Sophomore Mya Peters won the balance beam with a standout performance, scoring 9.900 and finishing 0.05 points ahead of second place.

Dehaan also walked away with an all around win for the Revs with a score of 39.475.

This meet marked the third-consecutive meet win for GW, as the Revs’ national ranking continues to soar.
