PREVIEW: Lexa Gates @ The Fillmore 11/16

By: Solange Zavala

Lexa Gates, the singer who locked herself in a glass box for ten hours listening to her new album Elite Vessel as New Yorkers watched from the streets, is bringing her I Am Tour to D.C.’s Fillmore Theatre this November 16.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Queens, NY, Gates first began releasing mixes from her laptop, drawing inspiration from MF DOOM, Tyler, the Creator, and jazz and R&B classics. She’s kept that DIY bedroom sound, but Elite Vessel brings a production quality to a whole new level. Her mixes move like a circus of Gates’s imagination coming to life.

On tracks like “Dirt,” “Stupid”, “Lover”, and “What You Wish For” , Gates’ takes an even deeper introspective dive with her project. Her verses unravel like a rant you never want to end, flowing in a kind of serenade that drifts between rap, ballad, and as Gates has described, spoken word.

Her confidence and vulnerability on each track is infectious.

You can get tickets to see her here.
