Thanks to Zoom University and the pandemic (yay?), I stumbled upon something I didn’t even know I needed: WRGW District Radio.
It all started with a compliment on my Niall Horan poster during a virtual class—because what better way to make friends than over music taste?—from Emma Wescott.
While I wasn’t too involved with the station at first, things changed when I randomly decided to intern on my friend, Noor-Jehan Ansari’s show: Chicken Soup Dumplings. After this introduction to college radio, I was hoping to pitch my own show, but unfortunately, there weren’t enough time slots available. So, I took a step back and didn’t spend as much time involved with WRGW.
However, a month into my last semester at GW, Emma asked me if I wanted to join the board as an assistant marketing director. Excited to rejoin radio in any way, I obviously said “yes!”.
Being part of board was a game-changer. I got to get a deeper look into how the station was run, learning about more shows than I initially knew about, and overall got to meet new people that I otherwise wouldn’t have come across. Plus, the cozy vibes of the station made me want to spend all my free time there. I was suddenly part of a chill community where I could just hang out with friends, study or meet new people while waiting for my show to start.
Looking back, I wish I had found WRGW earlier but hey, thanks to Emma and Zoom, I found a community that made my last year at GW full of memories that I’ll always hold on to.
