The George Washington Revolutionaries kicked off their 2025-26 regular season Monday night in the Charles E. Smith Center against the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, dominating 86-47. Freshman Colleen Phiri led the charge for the Revs with 18 points and five rebounds, followed by junior Kamari Sims, who ended the night with 13 points and 5 boards.
Ganiyat Adeduntan, known as Coach G, made her debut as GW’s head coach, returning to Foggy Bottom where she served as assistant coach from 2017 to 2021 before spending the last four years assisting on Colgate’s program.
“I think Coach G has set a good foundation and a standard that we have to rise to,” said Sims on the program’s new direction. ‘I think we all came together today and played for each other.”
The Revs and the Firebirds traded baskets throughout the first half, with GW maintaining a lead after the first quarter. Though UDC found a rhythm with 18 points in the second, GW was able settle into their game and pulled away in the third, outscoring UDC 27-15 and solidifying their win with 19 points in the fourth.
Other bright spots for the Revs included freshman Mia James, who played 22 minutes in the contest and scored 12 points. The team shot 55.6% from deep, tying the program record for three-pointers made in a single game (15).
“I continue to challenge them every single day, and how we’re trying to play and who we want to be and what we want to become,” said Coach Adeduntan. “We don’t need to become that today, but we need to be moving in the right direction.”
The Revs will look to carry momentum as they travel to take on Temple this weekend.
