Down to the Fifth: GW Outlasts Fordham in a Five-Set Battle

The GW Women’s Volleyball team won 2-3 against Fordham Saturday, a strong
recovery from their loss the night prior.

Entering this weekend with a 4-6record in the A-10, on the heels of a 3-game losing streak, their previous night’s defeat only made them hungrier for a win today. The Revs jumped out to a 6-point lead on the back of Abby Markworth’s powerful serves.

As Fordham began to close that point gap, the Revs started to lose that momentum, allowing the
ball to drop and setting Fordham up for dangerous kills. However, repeated kills from Alexis Rodriguez, Cayla Cogan, and Lydia Zeng, all set up by Markworth got the Revs back on track.

GW won the first set 25-20. However, the second set was a constant back-and-forth. GW’s largest lead was 3 points, with tight rallies and many errors from both teams. With both teams knotted at 16, Fordham began a rally and closed off the second set with an ace.

The third set was just as close, with GW winning 24-26. 16 kills from GW just in this set, 4 of them
from Rodriguez, out of her 17 on the game. Alongside those kills, she played 43 attacks this game,
holding the second-highest attack record of the team. However, the Revs could not put the game away, allowing Fordham to win the fourth set 25-18.

GW entered the fifth set needing to regain the momentum they had lost in the fourth. The Revs started the 5th set with a 5-point win streak, 4 of those coming from Sadee Gedse’s serves thus forcing Fordham to use both of their timeouts in a last-ditch attempt to stop that point gap from stretching. After a Fordham attack, Clarke sent the ball back across the net, and Fordham failed to receive it cleanly. The point sealed the fifth set for GW, 11-15, securing a 2-3 victory
and a much-needed rebound after Friday night’s loss.

The Revs will be back in the Charles E. Smith Center for a midweek matchup against rivals George Mason this Wednesday at 6pm.
