The George Washington University Revolutionaries defeat the George Mason Patriots in Women’s Volleyball with a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday night.

At the beginning of the game the Revs and Patriots looked evenly matched as they were going almost point for point in the first half of the first set. However, the Patriots tightened their game and gained a larger lead.

Despite falling behind, the Revs were able to get back into the game and bring the score back to a tie of 23-23. “We made some big offensive plays, had some really big kills that got us fired up and gave us a lot of confidence,” Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Nicole Alford said.

By winning the first set with a score of 27-25, the Revs were able to gain momentum that would help them in the second set.

Despite the Patriots winning the first point of the set and the teams going neck-in-neck yet again in the beginning, the Revs blew their way into the lead and led by as many as 10 points at one point.

The Revs only seemed to get stronger and more confident towards the second half of the second set. This improvement led into the third one after they won the second set 25-18.

“Remaining confident in the game plan and being able to execute, and in the second and third set just really coming out with some big momentum,” said Alford about how they were able to stay in the lead after winning the first set. Overall the team started dominating the court more and it showed in the post game stats.

The Revs performed better in team points, aces, kills, blocks, assists, and digs, and really showed in the third set. The Revs were playing like the stronger team the whole set and won it with a score of 25-18 again.

Individual players were also making a large difference on the court. Among the leading scorers were Cayla Cogan with 15, Alexis Rodriguez with 13.5, and Nicanora Clarke with 9.5. These players, along with the rest of the team, worked hard to secure the win.

This was an important game for the Revs as it determined whether or not they would make it to the post season tournament, and this win made their chances much more promising.

“So this was really important for us to take this one, position ourselves to be in the tournament because that’s our overall goal. We needed to take care of this one, but we did, so we’re feeling really good.,” Alford said.

The Revs travel to face off against Rhode Island this Saturday.
